However, starting from the 1940s the new vicar and the Missionaries of the Holy Spirit reorganized the ecclesial structure and took advantage of the social, economic and political transformations that occurred in the peninsula. In this paper some aspects of the Catholic Church’s institutional consolidation process in Baja California, which led to the establishment of the Diocese of Tijuana, are analyzed. To explain the above three general factors are considered: 1) the religious organization and the role of lay associations in this transformation, 2) the Population growth in northern Baja California, and 3) the relationship of the vicariate with local authorities and within the church.Durante la segunda mitad del siglo xix y la primera del xx, en Baja California se trató de trasformar a una iglesia católica misional en una diocesana, pero sin éxito. Sin embargo, a partir de la década de 1940 el nuevo vicario y la orden de los Misioneros del Espíritu Santo reorganizaron la estructura eclesial y aprovecharon las trasformaciones sociales, económicas y políticas ocurridas en Baja California. En este trabajo se analizan algunos aspectos del proceso de consolidación institucional de la Iglesia católica en la península, que desembocó en el establecimiento de la diócesis de Tijuana.
