Los espacios de la prostitución en Tijuana: turismo sexual entre varones

Abstract

A first approach to sex tourism among males in Tijuana is presented, starting from the identification of spaces within the heart of the city where male prostitution takes place. Social practices related to the use and appropriation of space by male sex workers are also analyzed. Our approach to the study of sex tourism is through the spatial dimension, which allows us to understand how sex workers interact, relate, and transform the spaces used for sex tourism.Taking into account the variables of accessibility, opportunity, and restriction, the spaces of prostitution are defined. Non-participant observation was fundamental to identifying sites during field work, as well as in-depth interviews with male sex workers who offer their services to tourists. The first findings show that male sex workers are not passive users of the territory where they work; they adapt and transform it until they appropriate it and generate spaces where they recognize each other and feel secure and protected, not only from their customers but also from the police.

Aquí se presenta un primer acercamiento al fenómeno del turismo sexual entre varones en Tijuana, a partir de la identificación de los espacios donde se lleva a cabo la prostitución masculina en el primer cuadro de la ciudad. También se analizan algunas prácticas sociales relacionadas con el uso y apropiación del espacio por parte de los sexoservidores. La aproximación al estudio del turismo sexual es a través de la dimensión espacial, la cual permite conocer cómo interactúan, se relacionan y se transforman los lugares donde se ejerce. A partir de las variables de accesibilidad, oportunidad y restricción se definen los espacios de la prostitución. Y, para identificarlos, la observación no participante fue fundamental en los recorridos de campo, así como las entrevistas a profundidad a sexoservidores que ofrecen sus servicios a turistas. Los primeros hallazgos muestran que ellos no son usuarios pasivos del territorio donde prestan sus servicios, sino que lo adaptan y transforman hasta apropiárselo y generar espacios donde se reconocen y se sienten más seguros y protegidos, no sólo de sus clientes, sino también de la policía.
