Assimilation and social integration: a case study of returning migrant minors settled in northern Mexico’s border cities

Abstract

Anti-immigrant policies implemented in the United States, in addition to the effects of the economic crisis of 2008, have increased the return to Mexico of many migrants, who return with their children. This article analyzes minors’ level of assimilation and social integration; consequently, it is limited to knowing the views of those who, along with their families, have settled in Tijuana, Nogales and Ciudad Juarez. The Survey on transnational families, education and employment was conducted, which was complemented with interviews with migrant minors. It was a case study and not about a statistically representative population. This paper provides information which leads to the understanding of the return migration to Mexico phenomenon. It shows that social interaction among minors is weak, as well as their pessimism concerning the working future; their main purpose is to return to the United States.

Las políticas antiinmigrantes, implementadas en Estados Unidos, y los efectos de la crisis económica de 2008 han incrementado el retorno a México de muchos migrantes, quienes regresan acompañados de sus hijos. En este artículo se analiza el grado de asimilación e integración social de los menores, por lo que se limita a conocer la opinión de los que, junto con sus familias, se han asentado en Tijuana, Nogales y Ciudad Juárez. Se utilizó la Encuesta sobre familias trasnacionales, educación y empleo, y se complementó con las entrevistas a los menores migrantes. Se trata de un estudio de caso, y no de una población estadísticamente representativa. Este trabajo aporta información que permite abonar a la comprensión del fenómeno migratorio de retorno a México; revela que la interacción social de los menores es débil, su pesimismo respecto al futuro laboral en México, y que en ellos prevalece la intención de regresar a la Unión Americana.
