Industrial Use of Water in the Heineken Brewery in Monterrey, Mexico

Abstract

The objective of this article is to analyze beer industrialization in the city of Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico. This city suffers from scarcity of water, the main raw material for the beverage manufacture. The theory of industrial organization is summarized, and production and marketing are analyzed to identify Heineken’s position in the national beer market. Statistics for water concessions allowed the construction of various industrial activities concentration indices. The comparison of those indices with the gross industrial value added resulted in the identification for the contributions to regional economic development. Notable among the main findings is the beer industry low contribution to regional GDP, compared to steel industry, whose water consumption exceeds the regional and national average for this industrial activity. This fact could lead to conflicts over water administration.

El objetivo es analizar el uso del agua en la industrialización de la cerveza en la ciudad de Monterrey, Nuevo León, México. Esta ciudad se caracteriza por la escasez del recurso que es la materia prima principal para la elaboración de la bebida. Se resume la teoría de la organización industrial y se analizan la producción y la comercialización de la industria para saber cuál es la posición de Heineken en el mercado cervecero nacional. Mediante estadísticas sobre las concesiones de agua, se construyen índices de concentración de varias actividades industriales y se cotejan con el valor agregado industrial bruto para saber cuánto contribuyen éstas al desarrollo económico regional. Entre los principales hallazgos, se puede destacar la baja contribución de la industria cervecera al producto interno bruto regional en comparación con la industria acerera, cuyo consumo de agua supera el promedio regional y nacional para esa actividad industrial, que puede desembocar en conflictos por la administración del agua.
