Healthy Housing and State of Health in Cities. The Case of Oaxaca, Mexico

Abstract

Objective: to analyze the effects of healthy housing on the health status of the cities of Oaxaca during the period 2000-2015. Methodology: investigation with application of the mixed effects linear regression statistical technique, which allows obtaining the existing association over time of the analyzed indices. Results: healthy housing contributes to maintaining a good state of health among citizens, especially those that have access to basic housing services and good quality of construction materials. Limitations: there is a lack of comparative studies on a national scale to analyze the effects of COVID-19 on housing. Value: the information obtained about the cities allow express the health of the population based on the conditions in the dwelling. Conclusions: the health status of cities improves with the healthy homes increment, as long as housing is thought of as a first space for the construction of public health.

Objetivo: analizar los efectos de la vivienda saludable en el estado de salud de los habitantes de las ciudades de Oaxaca durante el periodo 2000-2015. Metodología: se aplicó la técnica estadística de regresión lineal de efectos mixtos, que permite obtener la asociación de los índices analizados a lo largo del tiempo. Resultados: la vivienda saludable contribuye a mantener un buen estado de salud entre los habitantes de las ciudades, sobre todo en aquéllos cuyas casas tienen acceso a los servicios básicos y buena calidad en los materiales de construcción. Limitaciones: faltan estudios comparativos a escala nacional para analizar los efectos de la COVID-19 en las viviendas. Valor: la información sobre las ciudades da a conocer la salud de la población a partir de la vivienda. Conclusiones: el estado de salud de los residentes de las ciudades mejora con el progreso de las viviendas saludables, siempre y cuando éstas se piensen como un primer espacio de construcción de la salud pública.
