Abstract:
Monterrey's urban sprawl has entailed a marked social division of space. This article analyzes socio-spatial segregation in the Monterrey metropolitan area since its foundation in 1596 until the present. We examine the characteristics of this kind of segregation in this place and its context, as well as its cartographic expression through time and the geometric construction of its space. This analysis divides the historical process into four major stages: first, the city's foundation until the beginnings of Mexico's independence in the mid-19th century; second, the industrialization process and the creation of workers' neighborhoods from 1890 to 1940; third, the metropolitan expansion from the 1940s to the 1980s; concluding with the current period that begins in the 1990s and continues until today.
